Ireland Trail Running Tour

Map of Ireland

Experience Ireland like a local

My Ireland, Your Adventure

2027 Tour date: Saturday, June 5th – Saturday, June 12th

Join me on an 8-day small-group trail running adventure through the wild landscapes of Mayo and Sligo—the part of Ireland I call home. As a local trail runner, I want to take you onto some of my favourite trails and to the places I know and love.
From rugged mountain paths and remote bogland to dramatic Atlantic coastlines and sandy beaches, we’ll run through some of the West of Ireland’s most spectacular scenery, with routes taking us from the ancient landscape of Knocknarea and the remote trails of Wild Nephin National Park to the rugged beauty of Achill Island and the shores of Killary Fjord.
I’ve also made sure there’s plenty more to the week than just running. I want you to fully experience the places we visit and meet some of the people who make this corner of Ireland special.
We’ll see Irish sheepdogs in action and get up close to to some of Ireland’s incredible birds of prey. There’ll also be time to slow down and unwind while taking a traditional seaweed bath or enjoying a “hot & cold sauna” by the Atlantic.
And, of course, plenty of great local food, good company and craic along the way.

Your Trail Running Guide

Rachel Nolan

Trail running has been a big part of my life for years. I’m a trail runner and adventure racer, and I want to show you my home turf – where I love to get out and explore. These are trails I’ve run, mountains I’ve climbed, and coastlines I’ve spent countless hours discovering. I’ve designed this adventure around some of the routes and places that make this part of Ireland so special to me. Along the way, I’ll share some of my favourite trails, local spots and hidden gems, as well as the stories and people that make this corner of Ireland so unique. For me, trail running is about much more than the kilometres — it’s about getting outside, discovering somewhere new, enjoying good company and having an adventure along the way. And that’s exactly what I want you to experience here.

The trail running ITINERARY

Enjoy browsing through the itinerary day by day. This isn’t a race or a training camp. It’s a trail running vacation designed to combine great running with everything that makes the west of Ireland special. I’m not taking you around Ireland with a map and a checklist. These are trails I know personally — places I run, explore and return to because I love them. I’m looking forward to sharing this adventure with you. Any questions? Day 1 – ARRIVE IN THE WILD WEST

Day 2 -RUN IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF AN ANCIENT QUEEN

Mountain trails, Atlantic views & a very Irish recovery
Sunday, June 6th 2027

Your first trail running day takes you into the spectacular landscapes of Sligo, where mountain, forest and Atlantic coast come together.

We’ll start with the Queen Maeve Trail, one of my favourite ways to experience Sligo. Climb through forest trails and rugged mountain terrain towards the summit, where incredible views open out across Sligo Bay.

Then it’s back down towards the coast and the laid-back surf village of Strandhill. From there, we’ll follow the Wild Atlantic Way through Easky and along some of the rawest, most beautiful coastline in the west, stopping at the Beach Bar in Aughris Head for a well-earned drink and a taste of local life.

Back in Enniscrone, there’s no better way to finish a day on the trails than with an Atlantic dip followed by a traditional Irish seaweed bath. Your legs will thank you.

  • 🏃 Queen Maeve Trail — 8 km / 412 m elevation
  • 🌲 Forest trails & gravel paths
  • ⛰️ Rugged mountain terrain & wooden plank walks

Day 3 – THE ENCHANTED FOREST & THE DRUID’S CLIFFS

Forest trails, birds of prey & wild Atlantic magic
Monday, June 7th 2027

Today we explore my local trail playground, starting with a run through the enchanted woodland of Belleek. Follow winding forest paths onto the Fairy Trail before continuing along the River Moy, where riverside scenery and the fascinating Concrete Ship add a little unexpected history to the adventure. Then it’s time to meet some rather impressive locals as we get up close with birds of prey during a unique falconry experience. After lunch at Foxford Woollen Mills, we’ll head west to the wild and dramatic Downpatrick Head, where towering cliffs meet the Atlantic, before finishing the day with dinner at the magical Belleek Castle. An unforgettable mix of forest trails, riverside running, wild Atlantic scenery and a little Irish magic.

Day 4 – INTO THE WILD: WILD NEPHIN NATIONAL PARK

Untouched wilderness, mountain landscapes & an Atlantic sauna
Tuesday, June 8th 2027

Our route takes us deep into the wild landscapes of Wild Nephin National Park, one of Ireland’s most remote and untouched wilderness areas. We’ll head off the beaten path through open bogland and rugged mountain scenery, surrounded by vast landscapes with hardly a soul in sight.

From there, we continue west towards Achill Island, taking our time to soak up the spectacular scenery along the way. At Keel Beach, we’ll finish the day with a hot-and-cold sauna experience right beside the Atlantic — warming up in the sauna before taking the ultimate cold plunge into the sea. After a day immersed in the wild, there’s really no better way to finish.

Day 5 – FOLLOW THE PIRATE QUEEN

Run and explore Ireland’s largest island
Wednesday, June 9th 2027

Achill’s wild beauty takes centre stage as we follow in the footsteps of Grace O’Malley, Ireland’s legendary Pirate Queen, on a trail run through the island’s rugged landscape. This loop combines quiet country roads with an old, uneven bog track, taking us deep into the wild character of Achill.

Later, we’ll slow the pace and explore the atmospheric Deserted Village on foot, wandering among the haunting remains of the old settlement at the foot of Slievemore. From there, we’ll head to Keem Beach, one of Ireland’s most spectacular hidden beaches, tucked between dramatic cliffs at the western tip of the island.
For anyone with energy left in the legs, there’ll be the option to hike up towards some of Ireland’s highest sea cliffs for even more spectacular views. A day of island adventure, fascinating history and wild Atlantic scenery.

Thursday, June 10th 2027

Leaving Achill behind, we’ll follow the shores of Clew Bay towards Westport, taking in some of Mayo’s most spectacular coastal scenery along the way. We’ll stop at a local oyster farm for a tour and taste before continuing to the colourful town of Westport.

In the afternoon, you can choose your own adventure: follow me to take on Croagh Patrick for a challenging hike with incredible views across Clew Bay from the summit, or slow things down in Westport, where you can wander the colourful streets, browse the shops and soak up the atmosphere of one of Ireland’s most charming towns.

From there, we’ll run the historic Famine Trail beside Killary Fjord, surrounded by rugged mountains and sweeping views across the water.

Trail Running in Ireland: What to Expect

What level of trail running experience do I need?

All levels of experienced trail runners are welcome. You don’t need to be a fast or highly competitive runner—I’ll adapt the pace and routes to suit the group, with options to make some runs longer or shorter depending on the runners. This tour is best suited to runners who already have some trail running experience and are comfortable running on uneven and varied terrain. It’s not designed for complete beginners and it’s not suitable for non-running partners or anyone looking to join primarily as a walker. If you choose a shorter or walking option on a particular day, this will be self-guided, as I’ll be with the main running group.

How far will we run each day?

Most runs will be around 5–10 km, although this will vary depending on the route and the group. Stronger runners who want more mileage will have opportunities to extend some of the runs. The focus is on enjoying the trails rather than chasing a particular distance.

Will we run together as a group?

Yes, for the most part. This is a small-group adventure, so we’ll share the trails and enjoy the experience together rather than everyone heading off at their own pace. I’ll adapt the pace to suit the group and we’ll regroup along the way when needed, especially on climbs or more technical sections. There’ll also be opportunities for stronger runners to add a little extra distance on some days. The idea is to enjoy great trails, take in the views, and have good company along the way—not to worry about keeping up with the fastest runner.

How do I get to and from where the tour starts and finishes?

Flying from the US? Don’t worry — getting to and from the tour is easier than you might think.
The tour begins in Enniscrone in the evening of day 1.
✈️ Fly into Dublin Airport
🚎 Take the direct bus from the airport to Ballina OR
🚆 Take the train from Dublin Heuston Station (in the city centre – convenient if you want to check out Dublin before)
🚕 I’ll collect you from Ballina train/bus station to bring you to Enniscrone

Before your trip, I’ll send you clear arrival information and recommendations so you know exactly how to get to Ballina and where you need to be for the start of the tour.
The tour finishes in Westport on Day 8. Transport to the train station and your train to Dublin are included.
But you don’t necessarily have to return to Dublin! If you’d like to extend your Irish adventure after the tour, just let me know what you have in mind. I’m happy to suggest options for where to go next and the best way to get there.
Whether you want to spend a few extra days exploring the west coast, head south, visit Galway, or finish your trip in Dublin, I’m happy to help you plan the next part of your Irish adventure.

What are the trails like?

Expect plenty of variety! Depending on the day, we might run across boggy ground, open mountain, rocky paths, forest trails, and green roads. Irish trails can be wet, uneven and sometimes a little wild, which is all part of the fun. Good-grip trail running shoes are essential for this trip—road running shoes won’t cut it.

How much elevation is involved?

There will be some elevation gain on every run, although the amount will vary from day to day. Ireland is perhaps less flat than you might expect! That said, we’re not spending the week charging up huge mountain passes. The climbs are manageable, and we’ll take them at a pace that suits the group.

What if I don’t want to run the full route?

On some days, there may be options to take a shorter route or walk part of the route, depending on the trail and conditions. These options are self-guided, as I’ll be with the main running group. The tour is designed for people who want to run, so it’s not suitable for non-running partners or anyone looking to join primarily as a walker.

What if the weather is bad?

Welcome to Ireland! June can bring plenty of sunshine, but rain is always a possibility—and it won’t stop us getting out. We’ll keep an eye on conditions and adapt the route if needed, but the right clothing makes all the difference. Come prepared for changeable weather and we’ll be ready to embrace whatever the Irish skies throw at us.

What should I bring?

Layers, waterproofs and a good pair of trail running shoes with plenty of grip are essential. You’ll want clothing that can handle changeable Irish weather, plus whatever you normally like to have for a day on the trails. I’ll send you a detailed packing list before the trip so you know exactly what to bring.

Can I have my own room?

Yes. A single-room supplement is available for guests who prefer their own room. Please enquire for the current single-room supplement and availability.

Will I have to share a room with someone I don’t know?

The tour price is based on two people sharing, so shared accommodation is part of the standard pricing. If you’re travelling alone and would prefer your own room, a single-room supplement is available on request. If you’re travelling with a friend or partner, we’ll of course do our best to accommodate your rooming arrangements.

How does “Please pair me” work?

f you’re travelling on your own and would like to share a room, select “Please pair me” when booking. We’ll do our best to match you with another solo traveller of the same gender who has also selected this option. A room share can only be arranged if another suitable traveller is available, so we cannot guarantee a match. If we’re unable to find a suitable match, we’ll contact you to discuss the available options.

Do I need travel insurance?

Yes. All guests are required to have their own travel insurance that covers them for the full duration of the tour. We recommend choosing a policy that includes cover for medical expenses, cancellation, and activities included in your tour. Please make sure your policy is suitable for your individual circumstances and covers any activities you plan to take part in.

How does the booking process work?

Interested in joining? Just send me a quick enquiry through the “Contact Me” form. I’ll get back to you personally, answer any questions you have, and we’ll take it from there. No complicated booking process — just a friendly chat to make sure the tour is right for you. Once everything is agreed, I’ll guide you through the final steps to secure your place.

Making the Most of Your Trip

GOOD TO KNOW

During the tour, you’ll experience a real mix of west coast running. Expect everything from mountain climbs and remote bog trails to rocky paths, forest tracks and wide-open beaches. Some routes will get the heart pumping and test the legs, while others give us the chance to settle into an easy rhythm and take in the landscape. The aim isn’t to chase a time or rack up miles—it’s to enjoy great trails, challenge yourself, and have a brilliant week exploring Ireland on foot.

Our route takes us from the shores of Sligo Bay and the ancient landscape of Knocknarea into the wild heart of Mayo, including the remote trails of Letterkeen in Wild Nephin National Park and the dramatic landscapes of Achill Island. We’ll also head south along the Killary Fjord and take on the trails around Croagh Patrick, with the Atlantic and mountains providing the backdrop throughout.

And because a great adventure is about more than just the running, I’ve added plenty of ways to experience the region off the trails too. Relax with a traditional seaweed bath, warm up and cool down with a hot-and-cold sauna experience, meet some impressive four-legged athletes at a sheepdog demonstration, get up close with birds of prey, and take the plunge with a swim in the Atlantic after a run. Add in good food, local hospitality, a few stories, and plenty of the craic, and you’ve got a week that goes well beyond simply ticking trails off a list.
